Going ape usually means that you are having a fit or “going ballistic” is a more common term. For Halloween however “going ape” means getting into an ape costume and having fun with it. There is also the phrase “putting on a monkey suit” that guys use when referring to a tuxedo or dress suit. Again, for Halloween we really do mean putting on an actual monkey suit!
